About Kidney Function Discovery Panel

Kidney disease research faces several critical challenges to improve our understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of this pervasive and often debilitating condition. There is a pressing need for more comprehensive and accessible data on kidney disease epidemiology, progression, and risk factors. Creatinine and urea have traditionally been used as predictive biomarkers, however, these can be significantly impacted by many factors including protein ingestion and hydration status, which can make results inconsistent. Ā Research intoāŸnovel biomarkers for early detection and monitoring of kidney disease is essential to enable timely intervention and slow disease progression.

MetabolomicāŸprofilingāŸof kidney disease patients hasā€Æidentified several metabolites associated with alterations inā€Æcarbohydrate, amino acid, nucleotide, and lipid metabolism. The Kidney Function Discovery Panel analyzes 84 metabolites associated with the biochemical processes that affect kidney function to help researchers differentiate the diverse spectrum of kidney disease.

Delivering Absolute Quantification for Research and Biomarker Analysis

Our readily available or custom developed quantitative assays help you achieve your research and biomarker validation objectives with precise and fully validated methods. Our targeted assays and panels cover >1,000 metabolites and lipids across a wide range of biochemical classes, metabolic pathways, and physiological processes, and they can be customized to best fit any application.

Data Analysis Tools

Results of your metabolomic analysis using the Kidney Function Discovery Panel are delivered in the MyMetabolon portal. The portal offers revolutionary data analysis tools to help you visualize and identify metabolites of significance in your sample and the impact those metabolites haveāŸon your pathways of interest.

The Discovery Panel Report

Within the Discovery Panel Report, youĀ can visualizeĀ all detected metabolites in aĀ bubble plot. You can select statistical comparisons, adjust the p-value, flip the fold change, and search for a metabolite of interest from the toolbar at the top. You can also explore the significantly up- and- down-regulated metabolites. Within the bubble plot, quickly identify metabolites of significance and click those metabolites to learn more. The user can also download an image of the bubble plotāŸrepurposedāŸforāŸredistributionāŸoutsideāŸtheāŸMyMetabolonāŸportal.

Impact Explorer

Impact Explorer is the next step in diving deeper into your Discovery Panel data. Select up to six statistical comparisons to view within the heliogram visualization,āŸwhich is a reimagining of a heatmap of metabolite fold changes grouped by pathway and organized in a circular view. You can click on specific metabolites or associations and view the relationship between the groups. Additionally,āŸyouāŸcan download an image file for any view you find interesting in the heliogram.

Metabolite Profile Finder

The Metabolite Profile Finder can be used to explore a specific metabolite or pathway of interest. Both can be accessed byĀ clicking the Profile Finder tab, or by navigating from the Discovery Panel Report tab. In the Metabolite Profile Finder, you can see an overview of the metabolite of interest. This page includes links to PubChem, KEGG, and HMDB for further education. You can also view how that metabolite was statistically represented in each of the study comparisons. Finally, youāŸcan alsoāŸsee the associations linked to a given metabolite.

Applications for the Kidney Function Discovery Panel

Renal and Urological Disorders

The kidneys are essential for the elimination of waste products, the regulation of osmolality and blood pressure, pH homeostasis, and the secretion of certain hormones. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) often occurs as a result of other diseases, such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

Cancer

Oncology

Dysregulated metabolism contributes to but is not essential for the growth and proliferation of individual cancer cells ā€” patient physiology is as much a part of the equation as the tumor.āŸMetabolomics can both identify cancer-specific drug targets and assess the patientā€™s phenotype more broadly, addressing key questions like ‘who will respond to the therapy?’, ‘How can we expand the pool of responders?’,āŸor ‘How can we predict adverse events?’ ByāŸprovidingāŸaāŸfunctionalāŸreadoutāŸofāŸtheāŸmolecularāŸphenotype,āŸmetabolomics informs decision-making and positions development programs for success.

Related Targeted Panels for Absolute Quantification

Metabolon offers services to further your discovery across the research continuum. For a more specific understanding of metabolites of interest, Metabolon offers targeted panels that provide absolute quantification. Below are Metabolonā€™s targeted panels related to the Kidney Function Discovery Panel.

Creatinine Single Analyte Assay

Creatinine Single Analyte Assay

Creatinine is a product of creatineāŸbreakdown produced by muscles. Creatinine is removed from the body by the kidneys, which filter it from the blood and release it into the urine. Serum creatinine isāŸoften used as biomarker for acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease. Urinary creatinine is used to test sample dilution, and biomarker-to-creatinine ratio can be used to correct the fluctuation of urine volume.

Indoles-Uremic Toxicity Targeted Panel

Indoles/Uremic Toxicity Targeted Panel

Uremic toxicity is the buildup of toxic analytes that are not able to be adequately filtered by the kidneys due to kidney injury or disease. Indole metabolites of tryptophan, the tyrosine metabolite p-cresol sulfate and 4-ethylphenyl sulfate are a key group of gut microbiota-derived uremic compounds. Their formation is the result of a complex interaction between diet, gut microbiota and host. Increased production of these compounds by the gut microbiota and reduced clearance in kidney disease can lead to toxicity affecting nearly all systems in the body.

Metal Analysis Targeted Panel

Metal Analysis Targeted Panel

Metabolonā€™s ICP-MS-based Metal Analysis Targeted Panel provides precise measurements of biologically important metal ions in biological samples. In addition to the well-established problems of toxicity associated with several metals, the vital role these ions play in a variety of biological pathways, includingāŸcatalyzing enzymatic reactions or stabilizing protein structures, is still beingāŸelucidated.
